We recently had the opportunity to visit with a lady on the 5th anniversary of her husband’s death. He had passed rather suddenly from an aggressive form of cancer, at an age when few of us are thinking about making our final arrangements. And yet, when she went though her husband’s papers shortly after his death, she found specific instructions on where he was to be buried, the type of service he wanted, the type of stone he wanted - everything. Five years later, she still gets misty talking about how even after death, he was trying to take care of his family and relieve them of some stress.

The fact is, few of us are comfortable thinking about our own passing. It’s easier to imagine ourselves living into a grand old age than to consider the possibility of an early accident or illness. And yet, accepting responsibility for the future can help us all rest easier in the knowledge that the burden will not fall on our families, and the arrangements will be made exactly the way we want.
